Server Downtime

We have had some downtime over the last few days. Our problem have been related to disk integrity.

One or two files may be lost or corrupt. If you see any specific problems, please let us know.

We need some new storage, and I've been thinking about this for a while. If you have a look back at my earlier postings here, I indicated that I'd like to move the storage off the server, and into a purpose built storage device. I've done a bit of research, and I am considering a qnap product.

All of our data would move to this box. The great thing is that the storage would be independent of the server.

At the same time, this will provide more storage space, which will allow us to consider supporting other new emulators.

So, to help make this happen, I am asking our users to financially contribute to this project.

BUT: I am specifically asking those that have helped out before to do nothing.

I have a simple philosophy. If every user contributed a dollar, we'd be able to buy a dozen of these. Those that have made previous contributions, you have given enough to the site already. I'd like to see other people who have not previously contributed to help with this project.

Thanks to everyone who helped over the last few weeks. All current bills are now paid.

I have some plans for the future hardware upgrades, but its early days yet. The basic plan is to purchase something external to the server to house the storage in a raid configuration.

Moving to this setup will make it easy to do a complete server upgrade/reinstall, with all the "site" information stored externally.... I dont really have time to start planning this out at the moment, but I'll get back to you all when I have some more details.

This was initially posted as a low key forum post. I don't like making a big deal about money, but its time to move this post here.

There are two upcoming expenses that I need some help with. We are still US $300 short on an annual telehousing bill from our donations account.

At the moment, I've just got married, and my own personal funds are a little low as well. (Women do that to you).

So. Where to? Firstly, I need enough funds to pay for the current shortfall for telehousing charges.

Initially, we need to catch up to pay the already overdue bill, whilst still maintaining a decent level of income to plan for future expenses.

So, I will pick a target that should get us back on track by the end of this month, and put a tracker up for all to see. Hopefully, this will help encourage a few of you to help get us back on track.

Next, there is the topic of the future. The site is growing more and more each day. People are also asking for "newer, bigger, better, faster". I'd love to have enough grunt and disk space to say yes to all the new requests, but that's not always possible. If people want to look at bigger better faster, we need to start putting some funds aside in a different fund for new hardware. That is not urgent at this stage, but I'd like to put it on the agenda so that we can be ready when the next hardware upgrade needs to happen.

Many people just want to leach from every possible Internet site on the web. These same people NEVER give back. They don't help others, not even their friends from REAL LIFE because it's all about leaching and filling up their hard drives with files.

I frequent RetroRoms because of the boards. It is also a great place to find full sets of Retrogaming Roms.

If you've donated in the last 60 days, you will notice something new in the BitTorrent area - All CHD files are now available, at amazingly fast speeds.

This is our way of saying thanks for contributing to the site.

Of course, the CHD files will continue to be available via the normal method for all users.

You should all by now have recovered from the shock of the new look for the site. This is not the final product - this is just the first step.

Please forgive the current pixelisation of the logo and banner. I didnt really have enough time to get that sorted. I will get that fixed soon.... but it's a start. I will also probably look at revising the colours.

If anyone else wants to submit logos for the site, drop be a line via "Contact Us", or just upload to the BDA annonymous FTP server.

It's time to jazz up the site a little bit. I am after someone to do a new logo or two for the site.

The two specific ones I am after as a minimum is the green/white logo in the left corner of the pages, as well as the other one that says "arcade memories preserved" etc.....

One hint - I need transparant backgrounds to allow me to put your logo's on top of different coloured themes than the one that is in use at the moment....

Upload files via annonymous FTP to the server in the incoming directory....

I have a story to tell you.

Just imagine, you wanted to access the bittorrent tracker or some of the other enhanced parts of the site.

Most people around here would not think twice about contributing to the site.

One user thought it would be cool to donate ten cents.

Paypal fees for such a small transaction are actually ten cents.
