Planning to make a complete MAME 0.148 CHD V5 torrent. But so far I have only seen mixes of v4 and v5 CHDs, the CHD are often wrong due to buggy chdman in the past releases.

So my question is: if I want to build such a torrent, where should I begin? What are the alternatives to doing all the work manually myself?

Also not to thread-jack but is there an easy automated way preferably GUI to convert many v4 CHD's to v5? This would be a a per sub directory basis structure too, not just a bunch CHDs in one directory.

no problem, that's completely on topic I could use such a script too, altho my system specs won't allow me to do the bigger chd because I would run out of memory :-/

I believe CHDman FD which you can find at http://www.progettosnaps.net/tools/ , it's a limited front end for it.

That frontend appears old, I wouldn't recommend it, there were a lot of changes in chdman ever since. The update switch no longer exists.

It seems that there is not a very big interest in chd anymore, maybe with all the buggy chdman releases and all the problems with corrupted/deleted chds, people are now waiting for someone else to do the job, but if nobody does anything, nothing is gonna happen. :(

CHDMan_FE is not old. It's meant to be used with current versions of CHDMan (available in MAME 0.145u1 and above).

'Update' command no longer exist in CHDMan (current) because 'copy' command replaced it.

CHDMan_FE is limited on what commands to perform. Copy, info and verify is the only thing that works with this frontend. On top of it, CHDMan_FE is buggy when performing recursive sub-directory scanning. Doesn't always pick up sub-folders correctly.

AnnaWu recommended QCHDMan tool in another thread. A little intimidating, but very powerful. Tried it out on two CHDs so far. Works great. The only thing I haven't figure out is how to mass batch CHDs.

Of course you're aware that you cannot convert all chds to v5 without getting in trouble....all chds marked in MAME as BAD_DUMP will change their hashvalues when converting....

Which I believe is still the problem and the reason other torrents are mixed v4 and v5.

I have tested with hellngt/810eaa02.chd

I converted my v4 to v5 and got a hash matching mame source code :
DISK_IMAGE( "810eaa02", 0, BAD_DUMP SHA1(c407bad498cb87788ce332dbef5e8c6e19c1fd16) )

And as you can see it's marked as bad dump. I believe that bug Roman is talking about was already fixed, so far I haven't seen any bug left in chdman of MAME 0.148

I have made a batch file to mass convert all old chd into new
HOWTO:
put your old chds with their respective directories in /chd.old/
click the batch, new chds will be created in /chd.new/ with their directories preserved, your old chds won't be deleted so do not worry about it

Attach file:

zip convertchd.zip Size: 445.70 KB; Hits: 306
